HOW PUBLIC LIBRARIES ARE HANDLING SUMMER READING DURING COVID-19

I don’t think the pandemic was real to me until our district announced school closures. That same day, I bounded up the steps to my local library, on my way to return books, and found a sign on the front door. It said that the library was closing in a few hours. Indefinitely.

Though this made perfect sense, I felt a twinge of panic. My daughter and I typically found ourselves at the library two or three times a week, dropping off books, picking up new ones. What would we do with ourselves now? How would we get the next book in the Hilo series? What would I read??

On the other side of the circulation desk, library staffers were grappling with their own questions. What would it mean to close the library? How long would it last? How would they sustain themselves? And how could they continue to (safely) serve the community?

Research finds reading books has surged in lockdown #3dchicks

A new survey has revealed that people in the UK have almost doubled the amount of time they spend reading books since lockdown began, but instead of dystopian fiction readers are turning to the “comfort” of crime and thrillers.

Nielsen Book’s research found that 41% of people said they were reading more books since Boris Johnson imposed the measures on 23 March. According to the nationally representative sample of 1,000 adults, surveyed from 29 April to 1 May, the nation has also increased the amount of time it spends reading books from around 3.5 hours per week, to six. Just 10% of adults said they were reading less.

Romance Writers of America Launches New Book Award #3dchicks

Much to the surprise of everyone who watched the RWA’s very public attempt to destroy itself earlier this year, the Romance Writers of America has announced a new book award, one that is named after its (largely overlooked) black founder.

Audible is continuing their investment in podcasts. #3dchicks

Under growing pressure from Spotify, the e-commerce giant is looking to spend big in podcast land

In recent months, Audible, the audiobook service owned by Amazon.com Inc., has been meeting with talent agencies and producers to discuss acquiring potential new podcast projects—or, in the terminology that Audible prefers, “Audible Originals.” Audible is offering anywhere from a few hundred thousand dollars to a few million dollars per show, according to people familiar with the matter, more than every competitor except Spotify Technology SA.

Covid and my writing

redwingredtail's avatarredwingredtail

I’m not a great blogger, never have been. I never seem to have enough to say where I can say it every day, or week or month. But that is changing. I’m thinking that the times they are  changing…right?

It’s 2020 and unless you’ve been alone in a box, under a rock, you know what’s going on. Our lives have been hijacked by this virus, This every 100 year monster that has sidelined our entire world. Lives are being lost, jobs are no more, people are acting and reacting as if they were in the Twilight Zone. How does this relate to me and my writing? You may ask? I have been off work for 2 months and will be off for 2 more. Have I taken this time to write? Have I taken this time to develop a new story? No! Actually, hell no? I had to sit and…
